Max Verstappen, Red Bull’s Dutch sensation and four-time Formula 1 world champion, faced an early heartbreak at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, retiring from the race on the very first lap.
Starting from the front row, Verstappen had hoped to seize an early lead on a circuit where overtaking is notoriously difficult; however, a technical issue immediately stalled his bid.
“Mad Max” expressed his disbelief over team radio as the engine showed erratic behaviour even on the warm-up lap.
“The engine was bizarre, even on the warm up lap and then I could see on the grid the engine going crazy. The race was destroyed,” Verstappen said, reflecting his frustration and surprise.

With a cautious move to the left, he allowed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to pass safely, avoiding further complications on the opening lap.
The early retirement handed a clear advantage to Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who started from pole position and maintained the lead through the first corner. The Italian driver, currently leading the championship, is now well-positioned to secure a fifth consecutive Grand Prix victory, further extending his dominance in the season.
Red Bull will now focus on analysing the failure and ensuring reliability in upcoming races, as the battle for the championship intensifies.
