Peter Obi, the former Anambra State governor, has said elections are rigged in Nigeria because Nigerians allow them to be rigged, insisting that citizens must take responsibility for protecting their votes.
Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, made the remarks in a viral video while speaking to his supporters at a gathering in the United States.
The former Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate said Nigerians abandon their civic duty after casting their ballots.
Obi said he would do whatever is possible to protect votes, but stressed that citizens must also play their part.
“Elections are rigged in Nigeria because Nigerians want it to be rigged. It’s as simple as ABC,” Obi said.

“I will do whatever is possible to protect the votes, but unless Nigerians decide that their votes will count, it will not count. Because even if you vote and you stay in your polling unit and say this must be counted — yes, it will be counted.
“The average Nigerian doesn’t know who is his problem… So a Nigerian will rather now go and vote and go home, or go to night vigil when he should actually stay in the polling unit and be counting his vote.”
