Turkey has barred the installation of giant public screens for its upcoming World Cup match against Paraguay to avoid disrupting students sitting for the country’s university entrance examinations this weekend.

The directive was issued by Turkey’s Ministry of Interior, which instructed governors nationwide not to permit outdoor screenings of the match.

Several local authorities had planned to show Turkey’s Group D clash against Paraguay on large public screens in cities across the country. The match is scheduled to kick off at 6:00 am local time on Saturday.

Authorities said the decision was taken to reduce noise and traffic congestion during the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS), Turkey’s nationwide university entrance exam.

The YKS is taken annually by hundreds of thousands of students seeking admission into higher education institutions.

Football remains one of the most popular sports in Turkey, and excitement has been high as the national team makes its first World Cup appearance since finishing third in 2002.

However, Turkey faces a difficult path to the knockout stage after losing 2-0 to Australia in its opening Group D match on June 15. The group also includes co-hosts the United States.
