The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has said the construction of service carriageways along the Southern Parkway would ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity and accelerate development across the southern districts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at the project’s flag-off ceremony on Tuesday, Yilwatda described the Southern Parkway as a critical component of Abuja’s Southern Development Corridor and a key element of the city’s master plan.

“It is my singular honour and pleasure to be here to flag off the construction of the two service carriageways of the Southern Parkway from Arterial Road S20 to Ring Road 2 in the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

According to him, the Southern Parkway begins from the Inner Southern Expressway in Phase 1 and extends to Phase 4 of the city.

“In line with the Abuja Master Plan, when fully developed, it will enhance vehicular traffic circulation within the southern part of the city and provide vital inter-district connections across Phases 1 to 4 of the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

Yilwatda noted that the main carriageway of the road had already been completed and commissioned by the administration, adding that the new service lanes would complete the corridor and improve accessibility for residents.

He stressed that the service carriageways are essential infrastructure rather than luxury projects.

The APC National Chairman explained that residents of districts such as Durumi, Gaduwa, Duboyi and nearby mass housing estates currently experience severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak periods.

“Traffic will flow, travel time will drop, businesses will save money, and families will spend less time in traffic and more time together. That is the dividend of democracy, and that is the Renewed Hope that you can feel and touch every day.”

Yilwatda said the project forms part of the Nigerian Government’s broader infrastructure drive aimed at transforming the nation’s capital.

“This flag-off is part of the broader infrastructure revolution we promised Nigerians. In the last three years, we have refused to accept excuses; we chose action,” he said.

“The FCT is transforming before our eyes.”
