Norwegian striker Erling Haaland scored a late winner as Norway defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 on Tuesday to book a place in the World Cup last 16, where they will face Brazil on Sunday in New Jersey.
The Manchester City striker tapped home from close range in the 86th minute to seal Norway’s first-ever knockout victory at the World Cup and take his tally to five goals in the tournament.
After a cagey opening, Antonio Nusa broke the deadlock six minutes before half-time with a superb curling effort into the top corner after receiving a pass from captain Martin Odegaard.
Côte d’Ivoire introduced Manchester United forward Amad Diallo just after the hour mark, and he made an immediate impact. He first blocked a goal-bound effort to deny Norway before producing a brilliant solo run to equalise in the 74th minute.
With extra time approaching, Patrick Berg delivered a cross into the penalty area and Haaland reacted quickest to steer the ball past goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
The match between the two physical sides began cautiously at the Dallas Stadium.
Côte d’Ivoire created the first clear opportunity after 20 minutes when Ghislain Konan surged into the Norway penalty area but struck the side netting.

The Ivorians also protested after Yan Diomande was brought down on a counter-attack, with referee Jesus Valenzuela opting not to caution Norway defender David Moller Wolfe.
Diomande, the 19-year-old winger, continued to trouble the Norwegian defence as Côte d’Ivoire enjoyed their best spell of the first half.
Haaland struggled for service and could only direct a tame header straight at Fofana before Nusa produced the game’s opening goal with a moment of individual brilliance.
Norway pushed for a second before the break, but Ibrahim Sangare made a crucial block to deny Haaland.
Côte d’Ivoire started the second half strongly, with Nicolas Pepe forcing Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland into an important save.
Norway nearly doubled their advantage from a corner, but Diallo cleared the ball off the line to keep his side in the contest.
The winger then capped an outstanding cameo by weaving through two defenders before calmly finishing to restore parity.
However, Haaland had the final say, converting Berg’s cross to send Norway through.
Nyland preserved the victory in stoppage time by producing an excellent save from Diallo’s powerful free-kick, ensuring Norway advanced to face five-time world champions Brazil for a place in the quarter-finals.
