Troops from Sector 6 of the Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have foiled an attempted attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The Nigerian Army disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying that suspected assailants attempted to breach the institute’s perimeter at about 12:10 am.
According to the Army, troops on guard duty responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a gun battle that forced them to retreat.
The Army added that one suspected assailant was killed and that a rifle previously seized from a slain soldier was recovered.
“Preliminary checks confirmed that the weapon belonged to a Nigerian Army soldier who was killed in action during an earlier encounter with unidentified militia elements at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on 11 April 2026,” the Army said.

It added that the recovered rifle has been taken into military custody as investigators examine possible links between the attempted attack and previous incidents along the Kuru-Vom axis.
The body of the suspected attacker has been evacuated to a mortuary through the appropriate authorities, while troops have intensified area domination patrols, clearance operations and pursuit of the fleeing suspects around NIPSS and neighbouring communities.
The Army said the security situation remained under control and that normal activities at the institute and surrounding communities had continued uninterrupted.
Reaffirming its commitment to restoring peace in Plateau State, the Army urged residents to remain calm, go about their lawful activities and promptly report suspicious movements to security.
