The Presidency has criticised former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi over his claim that President Bola Tinubu’s policies prevented him from buying drugs for his late mother, saying the remark shows how far he is willing to go for political gain.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga made the comment in a post on X on Saturday.

Onanuga said Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike had lampooned Amaechi over what he described as a “ridiculous claim.”

“Amaechi has shown how terribly low he can go to play his politics,” Onanuga said.

He added, “Such a man cannot be entrusted, along with his boss, who has a box full of corruption and money-laundering cases, to pilot the affairs of our country.”

Onanuga, however, said there was no cause for worry, noting that Amaechi had himself said his principal, Atiku Abubakar, is unelectable.

Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, said in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday that his mother died because rising drug costs under Tinubu’s administration made it difficult for his family to care for her.

His mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Amaechi, died in July 2026 at the age of 89 and was buried on September 5, 2026, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Wike had earlier on Saturday criticised Amaechi during a visit to the Uzugbani Ekpeye National Executive Council at Ekpeye House in Ahoada, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“For anybody who watched television last night will cry when somebody is bringing his own mother to play politics,” Wike said.

He also said, “Instead of me to have such a child, may I be childless. Anybody here, any parent, if that is the kind of child you have, tell God, let me not have any child.”
