The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks to allow more eligible Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 election.
The commission announced this in a statement issued on Friday by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
Originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, the nationwide registration exercise will now close on July 24, 2026.
INEC said the decision followed a review of the exercise and consultations with its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
According to the commission, the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair opportunity to be included in the national register of voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The electoral body also announced the introduction of an online self-service registration portal, enabling first-time voters to begin and complete the registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.
INEC said the platform will feature a step-by-step guide to assist users and is equipped with identity verification, biometric validation and other security measures to protect the integrity of the voter register.
The commission encouraged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of both the extended registration period and the new online option, reaffirming its commitment to a credible, inclusive and technology-driven electoral process.
