New Russian strikes have killed at least seven people in Ukraine, while Ukraine has hit several Russian oil tankers just hours ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in Turkey.

A powerful explosion rocked Kyiv shortly after midnight, even before the city’s air raid sirens were activated, followed by several more blasts across the capital.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one person was killed after a missile strike prompted fires in warehouse buildings.

Russia has intensified attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, with more than 50 people killed in the capital this month during repeated missile and drone strikes.

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Zelensky has continued to push allies to provide more ammunition for US-made Patriot air defence systems.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, a mother and daughter were killed in the southern Mykolaiv region after Russian forces launched guided aerial bombs, according to regional military chief Vitaliy Kim.

Officials also reported two deaths in the northeastern Kharkiv region and two more in the frontline Kherson region.

Ukraine has also stepped up attacks inside Russia, describing them as retaliation for Moscow’s repeated strikes on Ukrainian cities.

In Russia, the governor of the Saratov region said one person was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack.

Ukraine has also increased operations targeting Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, a network of ageing oil tankers used to transport Russian petroleum exports.

The commander of Ukraine’s drone forces said: “21 Russian ships in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov had been hit over the last 72 hours.”
