Iran Hangs Two Suspected IS Operatives

Iranian authorities have executed two men convicted of links to the Islamic State (IS) group, according to the judiciary’s news website, Mizan Online.

The report said Mohiyodin Abdollahi and Hossein Palani were hanged on Tuesday after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentences.

“Following the supreme court’s final verdict and in accordance with legal procedure, two members of the terrorist Islamic State group, Mohiyodin Abdollahi and Hossein Palani, were hanged this morning,” Mizan Online reported.

The judiciary’s platform did not provide details on when the two men were arrested or when their trials took place.

According to Mizan, the men had been accused of planning attacks inside Iran and were convicted of “armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic.” The report said they “were planning to launch terrorist operations” in the country.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Iran in recent years, including a deadly assault in Kerman in January 2024 that targeted a memorial ceremony for former military commander Qassem Soleimani.

Iran remains one of the countries with the highest number of executions globally. Rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have reported that China is the only country believed to carry out more executions annually than Iran, though exact figures for China remain unavailable.

Human rights groups have repeatedly criticised Iran’s use of the death penalty, particularly in cases involving national security charges.

Authorities have increased the pace of executions in Iran since the beginning of the wider Middle East conflict that followed US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets on February 28.

The latest executions come as Iran continues to face security challenges linked to armed groups and regional tensions, with authorities maintaining that capital punishment is necessary for serious crimes and threats to national security.
