A federal court in Brooklyn sentenced Mexican drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada to life in prison on Monday.

U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan handed down the life sentence without the possibility of parole for Zambada’s decades-long leadership of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel and related racketeering violations.

The 76-year-old criminal leader co-founded and directed the transnational cartel alongside Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

In August 2025, Zambada formally pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges linked to his leadership of the enterprise, prompting prosecutors to waive the death penalty.

Throughout his criminal career, Zambada maintained a low profile, avoided photographs, and survived multiple assassination attempts.

U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocell Jr. emphasised that the sentence permanently closes a decades-long chapter of cartel-driven violence and drug trafficking.
