The United Kingdom (UK)’s annual inflation rate fell to 2.6 percent in June 2026, giving a boost to the country’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.

Figures released on Wednesday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed the Consumer Prices Index dropped from 2.8 percent in May to 2.6 percent in June, beating analysts’ expectations of 2.7 percent.

The decline was mainly driven by lower petrol and diesel prices after global crude oil prices fell following the ceasefire between the United States (US) and Iran.

However, analysts warned the drop may be temporary, as renewed fighting in the Middle East this month has pushed oil prices higher after a preliminary peace deal collapsed.

Burnham, who became prime minister on Monday, has pledged to ease the cost of living and announced an energy tax cut on his first full day in office.

“Falling inflation is news families want to hear but there is much more to do to give people the breathing space they need,” newly appointed Finance Minister John Healey said.

“We have chosen to focus on the cost of living in our first week, signalling that concern for working people will be at the heart of everything we do,” he added.

Recall that former Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned last month as prime minister and Labour Party leader after months of internal pressure, economic criticism and policy reversals.

Despite the latest figures, economists expect inflation to rise again in the coming months.

Paul Dales, Chief UK Economist at Capital Economics, said, “Higher inflation is still coming”

“The lagged effect from high energy prices will probably lift inflation above 3.0 percent in September and to about 3.5 percent early next year,” he added.
