Mali Rejects Reports Of Planned US Military Intervention

The Malian government has dismissed reports that the United States (US) is planning military action against the terrorist group JNIM, describing the claims as false.

Speaking at a news conference in Bamako on Thursday, Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop said the government had not received any official communication from the US on the matter.

His comments came after The Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing current and former US officials, that the Trump administration was considering military action against JNIM, Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Mali.

JNIM is an armed terrorist group linked to Al-Qaeda that operates mainly in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, as well as other parts of West Africa.

Diop said Mali only became aware of the reports through the media.

“We have no confirmation and no official statement from the United States or U.S. officials on this matter,” he said.

The Malian government insisted it remains committed to tackling insecurity and terrorism through its own efforts while awaiting any official communication from the US.
