Basketball legend LeBron James has confirmed he will join the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 NBA season, ending weeks of speculation over his future and beginning what he says will be the final chapter of his illustrious career.
The 41-year-old, a four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time leading scorer, announced the decision on Friday after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency at the end of last season.
In a post on X, James explained his motivation for choosing Philadelphia, saying: “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”
According to ESPN, citing James’s agent Rich Paul, the NBA legend has agreed to a two-year deal worth $8 million. The move pairs James with former NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid, rising star Tyrese Maxey, highly rated rookie VJ Edgecombe and recently acquired forward Jaylen Brown as Philadelphia attempts to end one of the league’s longest championship droughts.
James arrives after another productive season with the Lakers, where he averaged 20.9 points per game. However, he admitted retirement was a genuine possibility once the campaign ended.
“I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game,” James wrote. He added that he had been truthful when he said he needed time to determine whether he still loved playing the game.
After reflecting on his future, James concluded he still had unfinished business.
“This is my last decision,” he posted. “I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”
The announcement ended widespread speculation over his destination, with several contenders linked to the veteran forward. Possible returns to Cleveland or Miami, as well as a move to the Golden State Warriors, had all been discussed before James settled on Philadelphia.
James has built a reputation for transforming franchises into title winners. He captured back-to-back NBA championships with the Miami Heat in 2013 and 2014, led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their historic first NBA title in 2016, and guided the Lakers to the 2020 championship.
Philadelphia hopes he can deliver similar success. The 76ers have qualified for the playoffs in eight of the past nine seasons but have failed to progress beyond the second round during that period. Their last NBA Finals appearance came in 2001, while the franchise’s most recent championship was won in 1983.
Head coach Nick Nurse, who led the Toronto Raptors to the 2019 NBA title, will now oversee one of the league’s most experienced and talented rosters. Embiid, the 2023 NBA MVP, has yet to win an NBA championship despite a decorated individual career.
James and Embiid previously played together on the United States team that won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 76ers will now hope that partnership can finally deliver the franchise’s first NBA title in more than four decades.
