First Lady Seeks Support For Out-Of-School Children

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to Saudi Arabia to support in providing formal education for Almajiri and out-of-school children across the country.

Tinubu made the call on Thursday while receiving the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, Amb. Yousef Mohammed Al-Balawi, at the State House in Abuja.

The First Lady said a partnership between both countries could help transform Almajiri education by combining Islamic teachings with formal Western education.

She said addressing the challenges facing vulnerable children, especially Almajiri children in Northern Nigeria, was important to securing the country’s future.

“I work with the women and vulnerable children in the society, my heart goes out to the Almajiri children up North, I believe they need better care.

“This is because most of the insecurity challenges in the nation, if those particular group of children are not taken care of, I don’t know what might happen,” she said.

The First Lady added that providing formal education for the children would help create better opportunities and protect their future.

“I believe we can still start to give them formal education, if we are able to do that, the future of Nigeria will be well secured,” she added.

She also noted the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, expressing hope for stronger cooperation between both nations.

Speaking during the visit, Saudi Ambassador Al-Balawi said both countries share historical, cultural, and religious ties that could support stronger economic cooperation.

“As you are aware, our countries have strong relationship, we both share historical relationship, our nations share a lot of things, religion, culture and potentials to improve our relationship to get back in shape,” he said.

The ambassador, who has spent five months in Nigeria, said his engagements with Nigerian government officials would contribute positively to the growth of both countries.

“Our nations have strong common ambitions to improve our economy,” Al-Balawi added.

The Saudi envoy was accompanied during the visit by the Chief of Staff at the Embassy, Mohammed Bukar.
