Benue State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspected arms supplier linked to bandits and recovered 115 rounds of live ammunition in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondona, revealed this in a statement made available to journalists in Makurdi on Friday.
Aondona said the suspect, identified as Joro Jarkata, was arrested on Tuesday during a stop-and-search operation by officers of the Guma Division.
He explained that the police team intercepted two persons riding on a motorcycle, but one of them escaped into a nearby bush after sighting the officers.
“The remaining suspect, identified as Joro Jarkata, a 20-year-old male from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was apprehended,” the statement said.
A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition allegedly concealed in his possession.
The police spokesperson said Jarkata is currently in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi, for further investigation.
He added that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice and determine the source, destination and circumstances surrounding the movement of the ammunition.
The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the officers for their vigilance and quick response, saying their action led to the recovery.
Nwadiogbu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling the spread of illegal firearms and dismantling criminal networks threatening peace in the state.
The police also urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities to security authorities.
