The United States (US) President Donald Trump has said the United States and Israel have agreed to suspend planned military strikes on Iran, provided a deal to end the months-long conflict is reached quickly.
Trump made the announcement on Saturday in a post on his Truth Social platform after days of rising tensions and reports that the United States and Israel were preparing new attacks on Iranian targets.
The U.S. president had earlier warned that Iran could face a powerful military response, while reports suggested that oil refineries, power plants and other key infrastructure were among possible targets.
“The USA is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II,” Trump wrote.
However, he said the planned attack had been put on hold following requests from Iran and other Middle Eastern countries.
“Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack,” Trump said.
“Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,” he added.
Trump said the proposed agreement must include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
“The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment. Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE,” he said.
The conflict, which began on February 28 after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, has continued for more than five months, with both sides resuming exchanges of attacks in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump on Saturday and urged him to avoid further military action and pursue de-escalation instead.
The White House had not commented on the reported phone call as of the time of filing this report.
