Fighting between Ethiopian government forces and Tigray rebels has ended after clashes broke out near the border with Sudan, local and security sources told AFP on Sunday.
“There is a de-escalation,” one member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said on condition of anonymity, without giving any casualty figures.
Clashes involving heavy artillery and drones broke out in Shererina at about 6:00 am (0300 GMT) on Saturday and ended at about 5:00 am, they added.
A security source also confirmed that the clashes had stopped.
The TPLF had accused federal authorities on Saturday of escalating military operations in the region, including what it described as a large-scale ground offensive. Federal authorities had not immediately responded.
The clashes occurred in western Tigray, a disputed area currently controlled by nationalists from neighbouring Amhara region.
Federal troops and Tigrayan forces have been massed along northern Tigray’s border for months, with both sides accusing the other of seeking to provoke a new conflict.
The renewed tensions have raised fears of another war less than four years after the end of a conflict between the TPLF, Ethiopian government forces, local militias and Eritrean troops.
The conflict, which lasted from 2020 to 2022, killed at least 600,000 people, according to an African Union estimate.
