At least 21 people were killed and 37 others injured after two buses collided in southern Niger, the country’s official ANP news agency reported on Saturday.
The crash occurred on Friday, about 55 kilometres (35 miles) from Madaoua, along the road leading to Maradi.
ANP said the injured victims were taken to emergency departments at hospitals in Madaoua and Maradi for treatment.
One of the buses was reportedly carrying soldiers, although further details about the victims were not immediately available.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
The accident occurred as Niger continues a public awareness campaign aimed at reducing road crashes, which are common on the country’s roads.
According to the Nigerien Agency for Road Safety, more than 7,000 road accidents were recorded in 2025, resulting in over 1,200 deaths and more than 4,400 serious injuries.
Speeding, drink-driving and the poor condition of roads and vehicles remain among the major causes of road accidents in the country.
