A Guinean activist and teacher was kidnapped from his school in the capital, Conakry, on Saturday, and his whereabouts remain unknown, his wife said, in the latest disappearance of a regime critic in the West African nation.
Bella Bah was abducted from the school where he teaches in the afternoon, his wife Ami Bah said in a Facebook post, adding that she had received a call from a teacher informing her of the kidnapping.
Ami Bah told AFP on Sunday that she had had “no news” of her husband since Saturday and that she was “traumatised”.
A witness interviewed by AFP said that Bella Bah had been “kidnapped by men in uniform and wearing balaclavas who arrived in pick-up trucks”, and that he had been “dragged out and forcibly taken away”.
Guinean officials have not responded to requests for comment.
Bah’s disappearance comes just a few hours after a controversial post in which he criticised the chief imam of the Faisal Grand Mosque, Mamadou Saliou Camara.
Bah is well known for his biting comments about politics and society in Guinea, where critics of the regime are increasingly abducted or disappear.
The authorities regularly state that they are unaware of these disappearances.
Since General Mamadi Doumbouya seized power in a coup in 2021, several political parties have been suspended, protests have been suppressed, and numerous opposition and civil society leaders have been arrested, sentenced or forced into exile.
