Malawi to Face Cameroon in WAFCON Final

Malawi and Cameroon will contest the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday after both teams won their semi-final matches on Wednesday.

Malawi, appearing in the tournament for the first time, beat Algeria 3-1. Tabitha Chawinga scored twice and Temwa Chawinga once for the debutants.

Cameroon progressed after a penalty shootout against hosts Morocco. The match ended 0-0 after extra time, with Cameroon winning 3-1 on penalties.

Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina saved four Morocco penalties in the shootout. Myriam Maéva Nyadjou then scored the decisive kick to send Cameroon through.

The four semi-finalists have all qualified for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Malawi and Algeria will make their first appearances at the tournament.

Morocco will play in their second World Cup, having reached the last 16 in 2023. Cameroon has previously featured in the 2015 and 2019 editions.

Sunday’s final will see Malawi face Cameroon for the continental title. A record $2 million first prize is at stake.
