The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has unveiled former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Musa Daura, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Makinde made the announcement on Thursday at the party’s elective National Convention in Bauchi, where he outlined the opposition’s responsibilities ahead of the next general election.

The Oyo State Governor said the mission before opposition parties goes beyond securing electoral victory, arguing that the focus should be on offering Nigerians a credible alternative that addresses the country’s challenges and protects the future of its citizens.

“As we approach 2027, therefore, I believe the task before all of us is bigger than winning an election. It is to give Nigerians a real choice about the future of their country,” Makinde said.

He noted that the upcoming campaign season would likely be dominated by political slogans, promises and public declarations from candidates, but urged Nigerians to look beyond campaign messages and demand clear solutions from those seeking public office.

Makinde said voters should carefully assess the vision, plans, and commitment of political candidates, stressing that leadership should be measured by the ability to deliver meaningful change rather than solely by political ambitions.

Daura, who recently joined the APM after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), replaces Ibrahim Adamu Bala, who was earlier named as Makinde’s running mate. Bala’s selection was described as a temporary arrangement pending the party’s final decision.

The choice of Daura places a former security chief alongside Makinde as the APM begins preparations for the 2027 presidential contest. The party is expected to focus its campaign on presenting an alternative platform as political activities intensify ahead of the election.
