Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have agreed to sell a minority stake in the Premier League club to a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia.
The investment group, known as 1892 Holdings, is reportedly acquiring around one-third of Liverpool, with the deal valuing the club between £5 billion ($6.8 billion) and £6 billion.
FSG, which bought Liverpool for £300 million in 2010, has confirmed that it will retain majority ownership and operational control of the 20-time English champions. The club said the investment will bring together expertise from global business, technology and finance to support its long-term plans.
“Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club’s long-term interests in mind,” FSG president Mike Gordon said.
“As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special.”
Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, will reportedly join Liverpool’s expanded board as vice-chairman. He previously co-owned English Championship club Queens Park Rangers for 18 years.

“We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG,” Bhatia said.
“To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club’s continued success for years to come.”
Although Bezos will not join the board, Bryan Baum, founder of venture capital firm K5 Sports, which is funding Bezos’ investment, is expected to become a director. Saverin’s wife, Elaine, will also take up a board position.
The investment marks Bezos’ first move into team ownership after previous links to possible purchases of NFL franchises, including the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.
Liverpool enter the new season looking to recover after finishing fifth in the Premier League last campaign. The disappointing result led to Arne Slot leaving his role as manager just one year after guiding the club to a league title.
With the transfer window still open, the new investment could provide additional support as new manager Andoni Iraola looks to strengthen his squad.
