Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema moved closer to securing a second term on Monday as early election results gave him a commanding lead following Thursday’s national vote.

With more than two-thirds of the country’s 226 constituencies reported, Hichilema holds 62 per cent of the vote, positioning him for a first-round victory over main opposition leader Brian Mundubile, who trails at 36 per cent.

A candidate must capture over 50 per cent of the total vote to avoid a run-off election.

Controversy and opposition allegations of intimidation have shadowed the election process.

The Electoral Commission temporarily suspended vote counting for six hours on Friday, citing security threats and stolen ballot papers, a move that international observers from the European Union criticised for undermining public trust.

Furthermore, security forces raided Mundubile’s home late Sunday, arresting 11 individuals—including six opposition figures—over alleged militia activity.

However, the opposition party vehemently denied the claims and accused the government of falsifying charges.
