Unknown gunmen reportedly attacked Osun State governor Ademola Adeleke‘s convoy on Wednesday shortly after he left the Ataoja of Osogbo’s palace, where he had presented his Certificate of Return following his re-election.

The attack caused a gunfight between the assailants and security personnel attached to the governor, with shooting lasting between 12 and 15 minutes, according to eyewitnesses.

Adeleke had arrived at the palace at about 3:15 pm with a motorcade of approximately 20 vehicles after collecting his certificate from INEC’s Osun State headquarters.

An eyewitness told Punch that the governor was already inside his vehicle when the shooting began.

The attackers reportedly arrived in an unregistered Sienna bus through the Ita Olokan area of Osogbo.

The source said, “He was already in the bus that brought him and his close aides to the palace when we started hearing heavy gunshots. Those that attacked had come in an unregistered Sienna space bus through the Ita Olokan area of Osogbo.

“The shooting lasted for about 12 to 15 minutes before the governor’s convoy eventually left the palace. The governor’s security men and those hoodlums exchanged gunshots. Those hoodlums later fled the scene.”

Kolapo Alimi, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, confirmed the attack but said there were no casualties.

“They are hoodlums, and the governor’s security repelled them. They attacked the governor’s convoy at Ataoja’s palace. No casualty,” Alimi told Punch.

The shooting caused panic in the area, with traders abandoning their wares and businesses shutting down. Sporadic gunshots were still heard around the area as of 4:45 pm.
