OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT feature that lets the AI assistant interact directly with Apple’s Messages app on Mac computers, allowing users to read, compose, and send text messages through the chatbot.
The integration, rolled out on Thursday, lets ChatGPT search conversations, summarise message history, and provide information from users’ stored chats. However, the new capability has raised fresh privacy questions for Apple, a company that has built much of its reputation around protecting personal data and securing private communications.
The feature requires users to manually adjust privacy permissions in Mac System Settings, including enabling Full Disk Access. ChatGPT also requires approval to access contacts and automation tools before it can interact with Messages.

The permissions are similar to those required by other artificial intelligence tools that perform automated tasks across computer applications. However, Messages access is considered more sensitive because text conversations often contain personal, private and confidential information.
Apple had not immediately commented on the development at the time of reporting.
OpenAI has continued expanding ChatGPT’s ability to work with information stored on users’ devices. The company recently introduced support for analysing data from Apple’s Health app on iPhones and iPads, with Apple requiring users to approve any sharing of health information with external services.
The latest move places ChatGPT closer to an area Apple is developing for its own artificial intelligence-powered Siri assistant. Apple’s planned Siri upgrades are expected to allow the assistant to search through messages and other personal information stored on devices, a capability viewed as a major advantage for Apple’s AI ecosystem.
ChatGPT already works with several Mac applications, including Xcode, Notes and Terminal, but access to Messages represents a more sensitive step because of the private nature of digital conversations.
