Google’s artificial intelligence assistant Gemini has crossed one billion monthly users, marking a major milestone for the tech giant as it competes in the rapidly expanding AI market.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the achievement on Tuesday, describing Gemini as “our fastest growing product ever” and the 14th Google product to reach one billion users. The company said the figure was calculated based on the number of people using the Gemini app across its ecosystem.
The milestone comes as Google works to strengthen its artificial intelligence division following a major internal reorganisation. The company has faced challenges within its AI operations, including leadership changes at Google DeepMind, the research lab responsible for developing Gemini models.
Nobel Prize-winning scientist Demis Hassabis recently stepped away from the day-to-day running of DeepMind, while several senior researchers, including longtime Google engineer Jeff Dean, have also left the group.
Google is also facing pressure over the release of its next-generation AI models. Its flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro model, which was expected to launch in June, has yet to be released, while competitors have introduced models that have gained attention for stronger performance in areas such as computer coding.

Despite the competition, Google’s large user base remains a key advantage as the company integrates AI features across its products, including Search, Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.
The AI race has intensified since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, building a global user base that has grown rapidly. OpenAI announced in July that it had reached one billion users across its platforms, though it did not clarify whether the figure represented monthly or weekly users.
Meanwhile, competition has increased from companies including China’s DeepSeek and San Francisco-based Anthropic, the developer of Claude.
Research firm Sensor Tower estimates that ChatGPT’s share of the AI assistant market dropped below 50 per cent in the first half of the year, signalling a more competitive landscape as major technology firms battle for dominance in artificial intelligence.
