President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States will temporarily permit up to 300,000 metric tonnes of imported ground beef product without out-of-quota tariffs for the next 90 days.

His administration aims to lower food costs for American consumers ahead of upcoming midterm elections.

A shrinking U.S. cattle herd—now at its lowest level since the 1950s due to prolonged drought and global competition—has pushed domestic beef prices to record highs.

While Trump withheld the specific export countries, he stated that suppliers committed to selling the imported product at 25 per cent below current market rates.

The move follows previous efforts to cool ground beef inflation, including expanding beef trimming imports from Argentina.

Domestic cattle and rancher organisations continue to resist increased imports, emphasising the need to rebuild American herds instead.

The American Farm Bureau Federation noted that robust consumer demand continues to outpace local supply, creating ongoing market imbalance.

Furthermore, domestic producers face persistent herd-rebuilding challenges, including high input costs and animal health threats like the New World screwworm parasite.
