From her humble beginnings in Tennessee to writing some of the most recognisable songs in popular music, Parton built a remarkable legacy while using her success to support education and literacy.

Here are eight things to know about the country music icon.

  • She grew up in a large family

Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, and was the fourth of 12 children.

Her family lived in a small cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains, and her early experiences of poverty would later influence some of her music.

Songs such as “Coat of Many Colors” drew directly from her childhood and her family’s struggles.

  •  She started performing as a child

Parton’s musical career began remarkably early. She started singing on local radio and television programmes as a child and debuted at the Grand Ole Opry at just 13.

After finishing high school, she moved to Nashville to pursue music professionally.

  •  “Jolene” was one of her signature songs

Released in 1973, “Jolene” became one of Parton’s most recognisable songs.

The song tells the story of a woman pleading with another woman not to take her partner.

Its distinctive melody and emotional lyrics have made it one of Parton’s most enduring recordings, inspiring covers by artists across genres.
