The United States has announced more than $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for Nepal following catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border, with emergency food support planned for as many as 10,000 affected households.
The aid package includes life-saving assistance and up to three months of emergency food supplies for communities affected by the disaster, the US State Department said.
“There is no higher priority for us than the safety of American citizens,” the department said in a post on X, adding that US embassies in Nepal and China were working closely to assist American citizens and support disaster relief operations.
“The United States is standing with the people of Nepal by providing more than $3.6 million worth of life-saving humanitarian assistance,” the State Department said.
The flooding followed the collapse of part of a glacier in the Himalayas on Wednesday, sending large volumes of water into areas along the Nepal-Tibet border and causing widespread destruction.
At least 675 people have been killed, while large-scale search and rescue operations have been launched for nearly 3,000 people reported missing or stranded, including foreign tourists.
About 100 Americans are among those affected, prompting US diplomatic missions in the region to coordinate efforts to locate and assist them.
Nepal’s disaster management agency has reported that 589 foreign nationals are among those missing. The Nepal Tourism Board, meanwhile, said 261 foreign nationals have been rescued as emergency teams continue operations in flood-affected areas.
The disaster has placed additional pressure on Nepal’s emergency services as rescue teams work to reach communities cut off by flooding and debris.
The US humanitarian assistance is expected to support immediate relief efforts, particularly food access for households that have lost homes, livelihoods or access to essential supplies.
The scale of the disaster has also raised concerns about the safety of foreign visitors in the affected region, with authorities continuing to account for missing tourists and coordinate their evacuation and rescue where possible.
As rescue operations continue, Nepal faces the task of providing shelter, food and other essential services to thousands of people affected by the flooding, while international partners support the country’s emergency response.
