Two people have died and several others, including three police officers, have been injured after a gunman opened fire in Minneapolis, United States, police said.
The suspect is also dead, according to Garrett Parten, a spokesperson for the Minneapolis Police Department, who addressed reporters at a news conference on Wednesday. Parten said investigators were still working to determine how the suspect died.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were taken to hospital. One of those injured victims later died from their injuries, bringing the death toll from the attack to two.
Three police officers were among those hospitalised following the shooting. Two officers suffered gunshot wounds, but both were expected to survive. A hospital spokesperson told AFP they were in “stable condition.”
One officer was shot in the leg, while another underwent surgery. Authorities did not immediately disclose the nature of the third officer’s injuries.
Police have not provided details about a possible motive for the shooting, and no information about the circumstances leading up to the attack was released during the press conference.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz responded to the incident by asking residents to “pray for Minnesota” as authorities continued their investigation. Federal support was also being provided, with FBI Director Kash Patel saying agency personnel were responding to the incident.
City officials are expected to provide further updates during a later press conference as investigators work to establish what happened, identify the victims and determine the motive behind the attack.
