The world’s leading artificial intelligence companies are collaborating to create a self-regulatory standards body to address escalating safety concerns surrounding advanced AI models.

OpenAI confirmed Tuesday that it is working with Anthropic and Google on an initiative based on a proposal by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

Modelled after the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the proposed organisation would conduct large-scale testing on powerful AI systems before public release, funded primarily by the tech industry to secure top talent and compute resources.

However, significant industry division persists regarding who should govern these safety parameters.

Cohere CEO Aiden Gomez publicly criticised the effort, accusing major US AI labs of forming a cartel to entrench their own interests under the guise of safety.

The debate coincides with fresh warnings from former industry researchers, including former Anthropic worker Jacob Coxon and former Google DeepMind researcher Bilal Chughtai, who both publicly resigned over existential risks posed by rapid AI development.

While tech executives such as OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei have backed calls to slow the pace of AI advancement, opposition to regulation remains strong.

US President Donald Trump dismissed AI safety warnings as hoaxes, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang labelled apocalyptic predictions irresponsible and unscientific during a recent industry conference.
