Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi firmly rejected any proposals to displace Palestinians from Gaza during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday.
Sisi reaffirmed Cairo’s unyielding opposition to the relocation of Gaza’s population or any actions that threaten the Palestinian cause.
Abbas commended Egypt’s steadfast position, especially given that Egypt controls the only land border with Gaza outside Israeli control.
Cairo has consistently resisted pressure to absorb Gaza residents into the Sinai Peninsula, even turning down offers of foreign debt relief tied to resettlement schemes.
Sisi’s declaration followed statements by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who announced that Israel intends to execute a migration plan for Gaza’s population and resume full-scale military operations.
Katz claimed Israel is waiting on the United States to designate destinations for the territory’s two million residents, though US Ambassador Mike Huckabee denied any strategy to forcibly move Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Abbas briefed Sisi on Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank, focusing on the controversial E1 plan that threatens to sever connections between northern and southern Palestinian territories.
