Three people have died after a small single-engine plane crashed in the Swiss Alps in southwestern Switzerland, police said on Wednesday.
The Valais cantonal police said the aircraft crashed shortly before 4 pm (1400 GMT) into the northern slope of the Fluhalp area near the mountain resort of Leukerbad.
“Shortly before 4:00 pm (1400 GMT), for reasons which remain to be determined, the aircraft collided with the northern slope in the area of Fluhalp, near the mountain resort of Leukerbad,” the Valais cantonal police said.
Police said they had not yet determined the cause of the crash.
All three passengers aboard perished, the police said, adding that they were working to identify the victims.
The plane had taken off from Lugano in Ticino, Switzerland’s southern Italian-speaking canton, before stopping in the Valais city of Sion.
It later continued towards Buochs aerodrome in the central canton of Nidwalden.
Swiss authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances and cause of the crash.
