New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced on Saturday that President Donald Trump has agreed to immediately grant a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy who was fatally shot in the Bronx this week, allowing her to travel to the United States to mourn her son.
Mamdani, in a post on X, said he had spoken directly with the president about the matter.
“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away,” Mamdani wrote.
“Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person. I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately.”
The mayor added that “all of New York City is mourning this tragedy.”

Javits Frimpong, a 10th-grade student at Dreamyard Preparatory School, had moved to the Bronx from Ghana about a year ago to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong, a taxi driver.
On Thursday morning, he was on his way to school when he was shot in the abdomen near his home close to Crotona Park. He was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital later that day.

The New York Police Department has not announced any arrests or established a motive, though they are reportedly searching for suspects seen fleeing the area in surveillance footage.
Thomas Frimpong told reporters that his son had been experiencing bullying at school prior to the shooting, allegations that the police have not confirmed as being connected to the killing.
The death has drawn attention from Ghanaian authorities.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the government would work with US authorities to ensure justice is secured, and officials from Ghana’s Permanent Mission in New York visited the family.
