The Ghana Police Service has suspended seven members of a patrol team following an extortion incident in Accra.
The officers are accused of demanding money from a victim and allegedly compelling him to withdraw the money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) for them.
“The personnel, who were members of a patrol team, are alleged to have demanded money from their victim and compelled him to withdraw same from an ATM for them,” Deputy Superintendent of Police and Staff Officer, Public Affairs, Richmond Mensah, said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
The officers are Inspector Courage Boateng, General Sergeant Stephen Addo, General Corporal Moses Anyravi, General Corporal Prosper Adiabo, General Lance Corporal Samuel Anokye, General Constable Henrietta Coleman and General Constable Bernard Amoako.
The Police said it suspended the officers to allow the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate the allegations.
Mensah said the police would take appropriate action based on the investigation’s outcome.
“The Ghana Police Service assures the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken based on the outcome of the investigations,” the statement said.
