Georgia has sacked coach Willy Sagnol after their 1-0 home defeat to Northern Ireland in their opening Nations League match, the Georgian Football Federation (GFF) announced on Saturday.
The federation said former under-21 coach Ramaz Svanadze would take charge of the national team through the end of 2028. Svanadze, 45, previously led Georgia’s under-21 side to the European Championship finals on two occasions.
“The Georgian national football team will be coached by Georgian specialist Ramaz Svanadze until the end of 2028,” the country’s federation said.
“Svanadze will replace Frenchman Willy Sagnol as head coach.”
Sagnol, a former France international and Bayern Munich right-back, took over Georgia in February 2021 and guided the team to their first-ever appearance at a European Championship three years later.
The federation thanked Sagnol for his contribution to the national team and the achievements recorded during his tenure.
“Thank you, Willy Sagnol, for every minute spent with the Georgian national team and for the emotions we shared together along this historic path,” the federation added.
