Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced at the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday that Moscow stands ready to help stabilise the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf region as the conflict between the United States and Iran continues.

Speaking to world leaders, Lavrov called for a stable regional framework, stating, “We need trust in the relationships between the Gulf states, the Arab states, and Iran.”

He added that Russia, alongside other nations, “stands ready to constructively contribute to stabilising this strategically important region.”

In the same address, Lavrov targeted European governments regarding the war in Ukraine, accusing them of actively undermining potential diplomacy.

“Europe is doing everything it can to thwart peace talks in which the Trump administration is interested,” he declared, while insisting that Moscow will achieve its military goals in Ukraine “no matter the circumstances.”

The address followed a tense 20-minute meeting between Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, marking the first direct talks between foreign ministers from Moscow and Berlin since before Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Initiated by Berlin, the high-stakes encounter came amid escalating diplomatic friction, mutual consulate closures, and German accusations of Russian hybrid warfare, including an attempted drone strike on Leipzig airport.

During the closed-door meeting, Wadephul demanded that Moscow abandon its path of escalation against Europe and NATO, condemning Russia’s targeted attacks on Ukrainian civilians.

A German diplomat stated that Wadephul made clear that Russian sabotage incidents “would not shake Germany’s resolve to support Ukraine,” adding that “every month, tens of thousands of Russian soldiers die in a hopeless war of positions, while the Russian economy continues to collapse.”
