Cholera Claims Two Inmates in Kano Prison

A cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State has killed two inmates, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed on Saturday.

Joint laboratory tests by NCoS medical staff and Kano State public health authorities verified the infection on September 23, six days after medical workers isolated the first symptomatic inmate.

Chief Superintendent of Corrections JN Osuji reported that one inmate died inside the facility, while the second passed away at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital.

“The inmate was immediately admitted and treated at the facility’s medical centre, while emergency medical protocols were activated the following morning as health workers intensified medical intervention and monitoring,” Osuji noted.

Controller-General Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche expressed condolences to the families and deployed a team of senior medical officers from national headquarters to supervise ongoing containment efforts.

The NCoS confirmed that joint control measures with the Kano State Government have halted the spread, with no further fatalities recorded.
