Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu have arrived at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Lagos for the national premiere of MKO.
The documentary, screened on Thursday, Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day, tells the story of the late businessman, publisher, and politician, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

A video shared by the President’s Special Assistant Dada Olusegun on X captured their arrival. A band played the national anthem as the President and First Lady entered the venue. Guests also stood in respect.
Dada said, “President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu have arrived at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Iganmu, Lagos, for the national premiere of ‘MKO’.” He described the film as a feature-length documentary on Abiola’s life and political legacy.

The film revisits Abiola’s political career and his role in the struggle that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Filmmaker Ose Oyamendan directed it. Oyamendan used archival materials and interviews with people linked to the June 12 struggle to tell Abiola’s story.
The documentary features former military leaders: Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka and Abiola’s running mate, Babagana Kingibe, also feature in the film. Other contributors include members of the Abiola family, journalists and foreign diplomats who witnessed the political crisis.

The documentary also examines Abiola’s detention and the circumstances surrounding his death in 1998. The film first screened internationally at the 2026 Sheffield DocFest in the United Kingdom. Its Nigerian premiere is taking place on Independence Day before its nationwide cinema release on Friday, October 2. The premiere links Abiola’s June 12 struggle with Nigeria’s wider history of democracy and political change.
