Nigerians aged 18 to 34 make up nearly 29 percent of registered voters for the 2027 general election. That’s about 29.8 million people on the voting register, based on the latest numbers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC’s chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, shared these figures on Tuesday at a national stakeholders’ meeting—an event marking 100 days to the election.

Even with this large number of younger voters, the 35 to 49 age group comes out on top. They account for over 43 million registered voters or almost 42 percent of the total. When he presented the age breakdown, Amupitan pointed out that the 18 to 34 group is the second largest on the list.

“Those aged 18 to 34 years, numbering 29,777,576, represent 28.79 per cent,” he said.

There are 22,983,922 voters aged 50 to 69. Voters aged 70 and older total 7,402,291, which is about 7.16 percent. The numbers make it clear: most voters in the 2027 elections will be under 50.

INEC Registers More Than 10 Million New Voters

Amupitan explained that the current voters’ register comes from three rounds of Continuous Voter Registration, which took place from August 2025 to July 2026. Altogether, these three phases brought in 10,772,421 new voters. The numbers break down as follows: phase one added 2,611,266 people; phase two added another 4,121,835; and phase three registered 3,867,997.

INEC Sets Credibility as 2027 Election Goal

Amupitan said the commission is gearing up to make sure the 2027 election hits all the right marks for credibility. He also mentioned they’re aiming for more than just a smooth election—they want it to set the global standard for transparency, integrity, and peace.

“The 100-day milestone is not just a countdown. It is a call to action,” he said.
