Spanish tennis superstar Carlos Alcaraz claimed his first title since returning from a four-month injury layoff after defeating the Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 in the Japan Open final on Tuesday.
The world number three, who entered the tournament as the top seed and defending champion, was tested throughout the contest by Lehecka before securing his third title of the year and the 27th of his career.
The victory was Alcaraz’s first trophy since winning the Qatar Open in February and marked another important step in his return from a wrist injury that kept him out for four months.

Alcaraz, who also won the Australian Open earlier this year, entered Tuesday’s final with a 3-1 career record against Lehecka. However, the world number 19 made an impressive start, breaking Alcaraz’s serve in the opening game.

The Spaniard responded midway through the first set, breaking back after a lengthy battle, then increased the pressure with his powerful baseline game.
Lehecka remained difficult to break down and forced a tiebreak in the opening set. Alcaraz eventually took control, producing two well-executed drop shots before sealing the set 7-6. The Czech continued to challenge the defending champion in the second set, but Alcaraz secured the decisive break midway through and maintained his advantage to complete the straight-sets victory.

The triumph came hours after world number one Jannik Sinner announced that he had ended his season early because of a knee injury.
Alcaraz is scheduled to return to action at the Shanghai Masters, which begins on Wednesday. He withdrew from last year’s event shortly after winning in Tokyo, citing “physical issues” while also criticising the demands of the tennis calendar.
His latest title gives him added momentum as he prepares for another quick turnaround on the ATP Tour.
