United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged world governments to halt public subsidies for fossil fuel production, warning that these incentives are destroying global biodiversity and overheating the planet.
Speaking in Yerevan, Armenia, ahead of the upcoming UN biodiversity summit, Guterres condemned state handouts for environmentally damaging industries and called on leaders to redirect those financial resources toward sustainable development and environmental protection.
Governments continue to invest heavily in activities that degrade nature, with public subsidies for fossil fuels, intensive agriculture, and mining reaching an estimated $2.6 trillion annually.
According to UN figures, countries spend roughly $30 on nature-degrading practices for every dollar allocated to environmental conservation.

Guterres emphasised that the world remains severely off track to meet its 2030 global biodiversity targets as nearly 200 nations prepare to address the funding deficit at the Yerevan negotiations.
