The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has criticised political parties in Akwa Ibom State for failing to include Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) on their candidate lists for upcoming elective positions.

Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Anugbum Onuoha described the exclusion as unfair, emphasising that PwDs deserve representation and a sense of belonging in governance.

He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to an inclusive process and stated that the commission is training staff to better assist voters with disabilities during PVC collection and on election day.

Outlining preparations for the 2027 general elections, Onuoha confirmed that INEC has completed nine of the 14 scheduled timetable activities, with the publication of the final candidate list for governorship and State House of Assembly races set for Saturday.

He urged political parties to strictly observe the deadlines for submitting polling agent names—December 10 for Presidential and national assembly elections and January 6, 2027, for state-level polls—to ensure smooth operational coordination.

INEC has also opened its portal to recruit ad hoc personnel for the 2027 elections, advising applicants to register on the official website before the November 18 deadline.

To boost voter turnout and logistics, the commission has already conducted voter education visits across 23 of the state’s 31 Local Government Areas, successfully tested the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and begun receiving non-sensitive election materials.

Onuoha concluded by urging political parties and voters to reject violence and vote-buying to guarantee free and credible polls.
