The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has announced a controlled demolition of the structurally distressed Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island, starting Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The agency, in a statement signed by LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the exercise was approved after a thorough structural assessment by relevant agencies confirmed the building posed a significant risk to public safety.
The demolition will be carried out in a controlled and professional manner using global best practices, the statement said.
Cordons, traffic diversions
For the duration of the exercise, the immediate surroundings of the building will be cordoned off and access restricted.
Temporary traffic diversions will be in place on adjoining streets to ensure free movement and the safety of road users.

The agency said the exercise may produce mild noise and dust and appealed for the understanding of those in the neighbourhood.
LASEMA urged residents, business owners and motorists in the area to cooperate fully with emergency responders and traffic management officials, and advised the public to avoid the affected area, use alternative routes where necessary and adhere to safety instructions and diversion signs.
The agency said it would work with other state agencies to coordinate safety arrangements and ensure the operation runs smoothly.
