A Catholic priest, Patricio Sanchez, has died after a wooden crucifix fell from a wall and crushed him against the pulpit as he celebrated Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
“Father, Father! Call an ambulance!” people at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church could be heard shouting just before a livestreamed broadcast cuts out.
Footage of the incident circulated widely on social media on Sunday and was subsequently carried by several news outlets.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed Sanchez’s death in a statement, expressing its sympathy and support for his family and friends as they mourned his loss.
