Bayern Munich will face Dutch powerhouse Ajax in a friendly match in Nairobi, Kenya, on January 5, 2027, the German champions announced in an official statement on Wednesday.

The landmark fixture will officially open the new Raila Odinga International Stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania during the summer.

Celebrating the club’s African fanbase, Bayern marketing chief Rouven Kasper stated, “Bayern has millions of fantastic fans in Africa with whom we feel a close connection – it’s a continent with a huge passion for football.”

The high-profile match underscores Nairobi’s growing status as a major destination for international sports.

The announcement follows the city’s selection in September as the host for the 2029 World Athletics Championships, which will mark the first time the global track and field event takes place on the African continent.
