The House of Representatives urged the Nigerian government on Wednesday to rename the Federal University, Wukari, in Taraba State, after retired General Theophilus Danjuma, to honour his contributions to national development.
Lawmakers passed the resolution following a motion sponsored by Gaza Gbefwi, Mark Useni, and Ayuba Dampar during plenary.
Leading the debate, Gbefwi highlighted Danjuma’s extensive record in public and military service, philanthropy, and community development.
Emphasising the decision, Gbefwi stated: “The House recognises that naming the university after him would honour his contributions to national development and preserve a legacy of service for future generations.”
Following the vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas directed the House to formally ask the Nigerian government to change the institution’s name to TY Danjuma Federal University, Wukari.
The modification requires lawmakers to amend the university’s enabling act before it takes full effect.

To advance the process, the House mandated its Committee on University Education to collaborate with key stakeholders and draft the necessary legislation.
Established in 2011, the institution in northeastern Nigeria works to expand university access, drive research, and foster regional growth.
Danjuma, a Taraba State native, served as Chief of Army Staff from 1976 to 1979 and Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2003.
Through the TY Danjuma Foundation, he finances health, education, and social development projects across the country. The proposed renaming will take effect once the government completes all legislative and administrative requirements.
