Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta branded the club’s stunning League Cup exit to fourth-tier Fleetwood Town “a very sad day” after the Premier League champions suffered a 5-3 penalty shootout defeat on Tuesday.
Arteta made nine changes to his starting lineup ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, but his experimental side fell behind to Aaron Loupalo-Bi’s opener before Viktor Gyokeres equalised.
Arsenal’s night worsened when 16-year-old Max Dowman received a late red card for violent conduct, leaving the Gunners shorthanded before the decisive shootout.

Addressing the historic upset, Arteta took full responsibility while defending his players’ spirit.
“Zero problem attitude-wise. Otherwise, I would be here absolutely fuming,” Arteta said. “I’m sad; I think we are all sad. We have a massive responsibility to carry this badge in the best possible way.”

Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty before Conor Haughey converted the winner, handing Arsenal one of the most embarrassing defeats in club history.
Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor celebrated his side’s tactical triumph over Arteta’s squad after fans invaded the pitch. “I just can’t believe it,” Lawlor said.
“The biggest night in the club’s history in terms of opposition coming to town, and we’ve managed to beat the champions.”
