Nigerian military forces have eliminated four senior commanders of a Daesh-affiliated insurgent group, including a member of its decision-making Shura Council, following an assault on troop positions in Borno State, the military announced on Sunday.

According to Captain Mohammed Goni, acting media information officer for Operation Hadin Kai, the clash occurred late on October 31 in the Kukawa Local Government Area.

Supported by aerial assets, ground troops repelled the attack and neutralised several other fighters while recovering weapons, ammunition, and communication equipment.

The engagement follows a separate operation three days prior in Buni Yadi, where security forces reported killing 55 insurgents, including high-ranking leaders.

The military stated that these successive operations are intended to degrade the group’s command structure and disrupt its operational networks across the northeast.

The militant group, which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and is widely known as ISWAP, splintered from Boko Haram in 2016.

It has since established a significant presence in the Lake Chad Basin, extending its activities across Nigerian borders.

The broader insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, which began in 2009, has resulted in thousands of deaths and massive displacement, severely impacting regional livelihoods and humanitarian efforts.
